Dare to Compare | 2018 Audi Q5 vs 2018 BMW X5

Aesthetically, the 2018 Audi Q5 and the 2018 BMW X5 are certainly different, yet share notes of similarity. The 2018 BMW X5 is bigger and longer, giving it a more bulky footprint than the 2018 Audi Q5, which could mater here in Warrington and anywhere where traffic is plenty but parking spaces are not.

  • Price: The 2018 Audi Q5 starts at $41,400, but if you want to get behind the wheel of a 2018 BMW X5 model, you'll have to go all the way up to $56,950-that's a rather steep difference between entry-level trims (almost the difference of a small economy car), so it certainly begs the question: what exactly are you paying more for with the BMW X5?

  • All-Wheel Drive (AWD): For a vehicle that bills itself as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV), the 2018 BMW X5 doesn't even offer standard all-wheel drive (AWD). On the other hand, the 2018 Audi Q5 offers standard Audi quattro® all-wheel drive (AWD) with ultra® technology. It gives you all-wheel drive capability when you need it, but two-wheel efficiency when you don't.

  • Leather Upholstery: We won't mince words: standard leather upholstery, the 2018 Audi Q5's got it, but the 2018 BMW X5 doesn't-makes you ask why the 2018 BMW X5 is almost $15K pricier than the 2018 Audi Q5, huh?

  • Standard Engine: When it comes to power, both these luxury SUVs have rewarding engines beneath the bonnet, though the 2018 BMW X5 does have the slight advantage in this column, with a 3.0-liter engine rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, while the 2018 Audi Q5 starts with a 2.0-liter inline-four rated at 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The difference isn't huge, but we think the next bullet point will more than make up for it.

  • Standard Gas Mileage: While the 2018 Q5 doesn't offer quite as much standard power, it is the more efficient option between these two. The 2018 Audi Q5's 2.0 TFSI® paired with a seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch automatic transmission generates 23 mpg city/27 mpg highway, while the 2018 BMW X5's standard setup gets an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway.

While we're not in the business of making your decisions for you, we can think of plenty of good reasons to pick the 2018 Audi Q5 over the 2018 BMW X5, and a nearly-$15K difference in price is only one of them.
